"An Angler's Paradise" aptly describes East Clare
Nature bas been more than kind to us. We can boast of Lough Derg, The Shannon River, and The Clare Lakelands - all on our doorstep.

East Clare, on the western shore of Lough Derg has over 40 lakes and rivers, all surrounded by scenic beauty and peace. Coarse fishing is the most popular form of angling with good catches of Bream, Roach, Rudd, Teneh, Pike, Perch and Hybrids. Wild Brown Trout can be found in Lough Derg and some mountain lakes. The Lower Shannon is famous for its Salmon beats at Castleconnell. Each town and village has its own lake or river nearby. No matter where you choose to stay you are never far from a good fishing venue. Most of the lakes are well signposted and the signs also give information on the species of fish found there.

Killaloe, Ogonnelloe, Scariff, Tuamgraney, Mountshannon and Whitegate are all on the shores of Lough Derg. Lough Derg is the largest lake on the Shannon River. Covering an area of some 13,000 hectares, the lake stretches 35 km in length from Killaloe at the southern end to Portumna at the Northem tip. It's widest point is 12km from Scariff on the western shore to Youghal Bay on the eastern side. Lough Derg is usually fished by boat and these can be hired in any of the towns and villages. Shore fishing is also possible. The lake has good stocks of coarse fish and wild brown trout. Brown trout are usually fished for during the Mayfly season.

The Shannon River is the longest river in Ireland (386 km). As it exits Lough Derg at Killaloe, it flows onwards towards Limerick passing through the villages of O'Briensbridge and Castleconnell. Here in O'Briensbridge, the Shannon is wide and slow moving and is a well known coarse angling centre. Castleconnell is best known for salmon fishing. Nearer to Limerick, there are two more well known fishing locations - Plassey and Annacotty (at the Pumphouse).

Lough Graney, the biggest of the Clare Lakes can be accessed at Flagmount and Caher. The River Graney flows from Lough Graney through Lough O'Grady and exits as The Scariff River. This river bas been described as one of the most beautiful inland waterways in Ireland. Navigable for about 5 km, it meanders slowly from Scariff Harbour through Tuamgraney and on until it joins Lough Derg. Access for Coarse angling can be found in Scariff and Tuamgraney.

Bodyke is home to Bridget Lake (Silvergrove Lake) and O'Callaghan's Mills has Kilgory Lake. A few miles further on we find Doon Lake beside the village of Broadford. Cullaun Lake and its neighboring smaller lakes are adjacent to Kilkishen.

Between Tulla and Feakle, there are quiet a few lakes the most well know are Clondanagh Lake, Clondomey Lake, Rosslara Lake and Dromore Lake.

A license is required for salmon fishing. No license or permit is needed for Coarse Angling but there is a statutory limit on killing Pike. Only one pike per person per day maybe taken, maximum size 3 kgs (6.6 Ibs).

In the interest of conservation, anglers are requested to return all fish live to the waters.
